Description
This utilitarian Roseville pottery jug from the early 20th century is a dark chocolate brown, with a lighter coloured glaze dripping down around the top of it. It measures 9.75″ high, and is marked Roseville R&P Co. Ohio USA on the bottom. It is in good condition with no damage. It holds 2.5 litres or ten cups. From the information researched about the age, this jug would be estimated to be from 1904 – 1920’s.
The RP Co mark was used in the earlier pieces of Roseville Pottery, and is stamped on the bottom of the jug:
“RPCo – This mark appears on pieces made from the time the factory opened in 1904 through the 1920s. Rozane – The Rozane mark was used before the mid-1920s and sometimes also included the name of the line.”
From the Smithsonian Institute on American History, a brief excerpt on Roseville pottery:
“Before becoming an international phenomenon, the Arts and Crafts movement began with the ideas of British artisan William Morris (1834-1896) and writer John Ruskin (1819-1900). Morris and Ruskin believed that the growth of cities isolated urban workers and that mass production negatively affected artisan crafts.”
Roseville Pottery:
“Founded in 1890 by J.F. Weaver in Roseville, Ohio, Roseville Pottery was one of the fastest growing pottery companies at the turn of the century. After incorporating three other ceramic plants from 1895 to 1901, the company relocated to Zanesville, Ohio, where it remained until its eventual closure in 1954.”
