The Asian knot necklaces never cease to amaze me. Not only is there the stone carving aspect, but the entire necklace has intricate knotting and braiding to hold the beads in place. Instead of a clasp there are two strings to pull, so it can be opened wide, and slipped over your head. The knots at the top of the necklace are also complex and intricate. The use of highly decorative and sophisticated knots in Asia dates back to the fifth century. One can only imagine how long it takes to create a necklace like this one.
This necklace features a pendant of yellow gemstones, with a cluster of beads below it, and accent beads above. The carved flower has a small red carnelian gemstone at the centre. The beads below it also have smaller beads underneath them, with each one knotted into place. All of this is integrated into the knotting of the whole necklace in perfect symmetry and balance. The flower measures .8″ across. The length of the pendant from the top of the flower to include the beads below it is 2.35″. The full length of the pendant to include the beads above the flower is 3.25″. It also has two small beads at the top closure. When open to the max it measures 23″. The length is adjustable by pulling the two cords to the desired length. It is in excellent condition. It has been in the Quiet West collection a number of years, but I really cannot say how old it is.
